The establishment of Surin National Museum was initially when local people and government officers donated artifacts and antiquities for an exhibition at the city hall in 1974. These objects were later moved for preservation at Surin Province Education Office.
Later, numbers of given artifacts and antiques from people, government officials and archaeological practice were gradually increased, that caused the exhibition area to be unsuitable for service. Together with in 1992, Fine Arts Department introduced a policy to improve and establish each city a national museum throughout the country; that worked up Surin National Museum to be one of the primary list to be developed under the policy.
The Fine Arts Department requested for a state land from the Treasury Department for 15 rais, at the area of km. 4, along Surin-Chong Chom Road, to be a site for the new Surin National Museum. A modern designed exhibition hall was adapted from an ancient Khmer palace architecture. The hall consists of interconnected buildings which divided into 4 parts – hallway, educational and office services zone, exhibition zone and museum zone.
Untill April 17, 2009, with the grace of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to preside over the opening ceremony, Surin National Museum was officially established.
