A circular cylinder, with closed bottom and open top, is made from wood or metal. It can be used to contain things or as a weighing instrument, 20 thanan (an ancient measure of capacity) or 20 liters net and 10 liters net. The local always use thang (literally means bucket or as an ancient measure of capacity, it equals to 20 thanan) as a weighing instrument for grains such as paddy rice, beans, sesame seeds, corn seeds, and etc. The bucket which is used as a weighing instrument is usually made from wood, and there are three stripes of metal at the bottom, in the middle and at the top of the weighing bucket to label the weighing net, and a wooden beam as its handle. The use of the weighing cylinder is that fulfilling the cylinder with the paddy rice, rice or the other types of grains and then using a bamboo rod to sweep away the top of the bucket. In the past, the net of 100 thang is equal to 1 kwien (an ancient measure of capacity), and 50 thang is equal to 1 bantiew (thin wooden bars used in counting when weighing out the paddy rice).
